Career change guide

【For Engineers】 Complete Guide On Writing A Curriculum Vitae

In this article, we are going to explain specific examples to explain the points that engineers should be able to suppress in their curriculum vitae when they change careers in Japan.

The Point of Communicating Your Experience is “Writing It Simple”

A curriculum vitae OR CV is a document that appeals to your skills and abilities, unlike a resume.

It is more important to write simple things that you can achieve than to write a lot in difficult Japanese.

First of all, let’s summarize all your skills and experience.

Download the format of the CV first, as we’ll follow the job history section.

<Excel Version>Download the CV here

<PDF Version>Download the sample CV here

※The picture above is the same as<PDF Version>Download the sample CV here

Did you download the documents? Then, let’s start making the curriculum vitae to pass the document selection.

Date & Name

1 Date, 2 Name

Date:Include the date you want to submit your document

Name:You don’t need Ruby character (Furigana) Make space between your last name, first name, and your middle name

Writing Your Specialty In A Bullet point is OK

3 Specialty

Let’s describe what you are good at in the work that you have been involved in up until now.

Here are some Examples, IF your contents look like this on the bottom, it’s GOOD! The bullet point form is OK!

  • Skills & Industry with the most experience
  • Skills you can train to your subordinates

Example 1 & 2, whichever you write, is fine. IF you don’t have that much experience OR IF you don’t have anything, you’re good at, WE SUGGEST for you to describe the skills you have experienced.

【Example 1】

  • Attendance & Development of the labor-management system (10 years)
  • Business knowledge of the financial industry (8 years)
  • Design & development of business applications (7 years)
  • Able to construct database & tuning with MySQL
  • Professional App development using JavaScript. Able to make a design document, able to negotiate with the customer, and able to give guidance to your members
  • Able to install & Design the Windows Server 2012, 2016

【Example 2】

OS: Windows, Linux, Android, IOS

Language: ASP, C#, JavaScript, SQL

Framework: Struts, JSF (Java Server Faces), Spring Framework

DB: Access, Amazon, Dynamo DB, Google, Big Query

Write Down “Way of Approaching Work” & “Specialty & Skills” For Your Self Appeal

4 Self Appeal Entry Content

Let’s list the next points 1 & 2 in at least 3 lines

Point 1: Specialty & Skills

Point 2: How to approach work

Point 1:Specialty & Skills

Give an example and an explanation. 1~2 sentences are okay.

【Example 1】

I am good at developing business systems. Until now, I have developed customer information management systems and contract management systems. I can communicate in English, Japanese and Vietnamese.

【Example 2】

I can handle everything from requirement definition to testing and operation. I am good at making websites using PHP, and I have been developing job sites, wedding hall introduction sites, and child-rearing support sites. I also have experience in member training.

【Example 3】

I have been developing an iOS environment for two years. I have experience in app development for the real estate industry and has extensive experience from requirement definition to implementation. I am good at planning and executing optimization of the entire system as well as the task in front of me.

Point 2: How To Approach Work

For example, “I value communication” and “I am studying voluntarily”, let’s describe how to approach work. This is also OK in one or two sentences.

【Example 1】

I can proceed with the project while communicating with others.

【Example 2】

I study spontaneously on holidays. To keep up with new technologies, I try to input the latest technology by reading and researching on the WEB.

【Example 3】

When I was in management, I was looking back every 3 days on our tasks to see if the team members were running late on their tasks.

<This Content Is GOOD>

Let’s put together points 1 & 2. It’s okay with simple Japanese.

Be aware of simple writing of the skills you are good at & the skills you can appeal using bullet point form.

【Example 1】

I am good at developing business systems. Until now, I have developed customer information management systems and contract management systems. I can communicate in English, Japanese and Vietnamese. Spontaneously, I read and study new languages, technologies and make every effort to make use of them in my work.

【Example 2】

I can handle everything from requirement definition to testing and operation. As a full-stack engineer, I developed a job site. I am mainly good at development in iOS environments. I also have experience in coaching members, I am developing in communication with team members, directors, and sales.

【Example 3】

I have been developing an iOS environment for two years. I have experience in app development for the real estate industry and has extensive experience from requirement definition to implementation. I will work to respond to urgent instructions. I can work together as a team to advance the project while communicating.

<This Content Is BAD>

IF you don’t know what skills you got, it can be DIFFICULT to pass the document selection even if there is a lot of content on your document. Let’s TRY and write down “What I Can Do” simply to pass the document selection.

【Example 1】

I work fast. I think communication is very important. I think that individual ability is important because the project advances as the team progresses. When you have trouble, you need to think about the solution first. I’m good at Java.

<Reason Why This Is BAD>

  • Describing only the personal idea towards work.
  • Not describing the specific skills you have

→In addition to describing the personal idea towards work, let’s clearly describe the scope of work you are involved in.

<Do This, & You’re OK!>

I take pride in the speed of my work the most. I communicate and work so that we can respond immediately when there is trouble. I can develop applications in Java, and I was in charge of everything from detailed design to testing and operation.

 I was in charge of everything from “Detailed Design to Testing & Operation.” = Add the scope of business

【Example 2】

I’ve been interested in new programming languages for a long time and I’m studying spontaneously. Recently, I developed an app for the real estate industry at Kotlin. I am good at system development using PHP and Java. I was in charge of the team from requirement definition to operation, and I also managed it.

<Reason Why This Is BAD>

  • It is not sure if you’re studying spontaneously or whether it was used in actual work.

→ Let’s focus on the job descriptions that you have experience.

  • It is difficult to understand the work you are in charge of.

→ Let’s summarize what you can do for each of your duties. It will be EASIER to read if you continue to write a related job description.

<Do This, & You’re OK!>

I am good at developing web applications using PHP and Java. I have extensive experience in everything from requirement definition to operation and was also in charge of management. Recently, I have experienced developing apps for the financial industry at Kotlin, and I can handle both iOS and Android.

<Project Details>

  • Customer list management system test
  • Sales Management System Programming – Test
  • Renewal of product management system due to product renewal Programming

Points On Writing The Details of Your CV

Writing The Same Projects On A Different Line Is A Waste

<The 1st Project>

Project Name:Development of a Sales support application

Job Description:I was involved in the business from implementation to testing. The main scope of business is the flow from test design to operation confirmation.

<The 2nd Project>

Project Name:Development of a Sales support application

Job Description:Rebuilding of the order management system. I was in charge of the implementation.

<The 3rd Project>

Project Name:Development of a Sales support application

Job Description:Rebuilding the order management system. In cooperation with the accounting department & the sales department, I was in charge of implementation & testing.

All 3 of the above are developing the same system.

The job description you are in charge of is different, but you don’t have to write it separately in your resume.

Even though you have been in charge of one project for a long time, if you write it separately for each job in charge, the interviewer might see it as a negative because it’ll look like you have changed the project many times in a short period.

The interviewer might even think “There are only a few skills that can be used in one project.”

IF you have worked on a single project more than once, put it together.

CAUTION! Don’t Force To Put Different Projects All In One

We’ve told you that you can put “same projects all in one” but putting different projects all in one is a BIG NONO!!!

IF you were involved in several different projects, you must list them separately!

Example

IF you are involved in a different project in the same company.

The following are all the construction of internal systems, but if the areas are different as shown below, they must be separated as separate projects.

  • Construction of the Sales Department Customer Management System
  • Construction of an Original Product on a recruitment site
  • Construction of Human Resources & Labor Related Time Management System

<The 1st Project>

Project Name:Construction of a customer management system

Job Description:Fixing the problem with the existing system. I have adjusted the requirements to build a new customer management system.

<The 2nd Project>

Project Name:Construction of a Recruitment Site

Job Description:Mainly in charge of the front end. I worked hard to communicate with designers & create pages from the user’s point of view.

<The 3rd Project>

Project Name:Construction of the Core System

Job Description:I have built a new system for attendance & labor. I was responsible for setting requirements, designing & implementing the entire system.

IF you have worked on several different projects, list each as a single project separately!!!

Writing Skills & Experience Separately Is IMPORTANT!!!

We RECOMMEND you write down ALL your experience & Skills.

Let’s write the self-appeal & the job description by holding down the point rather than writing a long description.

It is OK if you don’t use difficult Japanese. Please prepare the documents and the CV based on what we have told you so far.

We HOPE your career change activities go successfully!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!
